A chat with Jozzy Bevin - Proud to be a Dairy Farmer

The Proud to be a Dairy Farmer initiative represents an opportunity for the industry to put its best foot forward, according to Farm Source Area Manager Jozzy Bevin. 

“It’s an exciting opportunity for like-minded young people to get together, discuss their goals and work on ways to achieve them,” said Jozzy. 

Inspired by Fonterra’s ‘Proud to be a Chef’ program, this new initiative is led by the Fonterra Australia Suppliers’ Council in conjunction with Fonterra. It is specifically designed for dairy farm employees looking to grow their career in dairy and help them understand the pathways available. 

“The program is a terrific occasion for people already motivated to be part of our industry to see the possibilities that are open to them. 

“There are so many different avenues into our industry, and it’s essential for new entrants to recognise them all – it’s not just about milking cows. We need to encourage people from all backgrounds and levels of expertise, and the Proud to be a Dairy Farmer initiative is a great vehicle to get them engaged. 

“We have people who complete a variety of tasks – milking cows, rearing calves, managing pastures and undertaking on-farm maintenance. What’s important is they all want to be part of a thriving dairy industry, and this program will help them to take the next step.” 

Jozzy, whose own experience with dairy spans more than 35 years, said that farmers looking to upskill and retain their workforce should support suitable employees and encourage them to apply. 

“It’s hard to think of a better opportunity for their staff members or kids who are keen to work in the family business to improve their knowledge and learn from seeing different dairy business models in action.” 

The inaugural program will be held in Melbourne from May 4-6, covering a range of relevant topics, with guest speakers, a formal dinner and a day dedicated to farm and sites visits in Gippsland. All costs, including accommodation and main meals, will be covered by FASC, with flights also covered for Tasmanian participants.
