Fonterra suppliers dominated at the 2021 Tasmanian Dairy Awards announced at the Tasmanian Dairy Conference in Devonport on 19 March.

Four of the seven awards handed out at the ceremony were received by Fonterra suppliers, including Rosemount Agriculture farmers Rob and Jo Bradley and James and Sophie Greenacre, who took out the major award – the 2021 Dairy Business of the Year.

The farm is located near Cressy and currently milking about 1,250 dairy cows on 550 hectares of land, of which approximately 330 hectares is under centre pivot irrigation.

Rosemount Agriculture is an equity partnership between the two couples.  Rob and Jo raise the young stock, while James and Sophie manage the dairy. The work relationship between the couples started in 2017 and became an equity partnership in the 2018-19 season.

Judging for the award involved a scoring system that covered financial performance, management, pasture, herd size and environment.

The judges noted Rosemount Agriculture’s strong financial performance, achieving 12.4 per cent return on total assets. The farm was also recognised for its strong focus on managing cost of production, maximising pasture consumption and prioritising the health of their herd.

Clovelly Dairy, led by FASC member Mark Miers, was named Dairy Employer of Choice. This award identifies employers providing a combination of external support, internal resources, network provision and board knowledge to ensure high levels of support for all staff members.

Smithton farmers Luke and Tammy Tuxworth received the Dairy Farm Safety Award, recognising their ongoing work in setting high standards for employee safety.

Rising star Rory Wellwood won the Young Farmer Encouragement Award. Open to people working on dairy farms aged between 18 and 35, the award recognises the importance of young people to ensure the sustainable future of the industry.

The judges look for someone who enjoys working within dairy, is achieving their goals and passionate about the future of the industry.

Rory only entered into farm ownership this year after serving his apprenticeship as a worker and manager on Tasmanian farms and looks set for a bright future in dairy.

Fonterra Regional Manager - South, Darren Smart, said the awards confirm the quality of Fonterra’s farmers in Tasmania, the quality of milk they produce and their dedication to the industry.

“It’s great to see our farmers recognised as leaders by the industry to which they devote so much time and effort.

“We feel honoured to support some of the best dairy operators in the business and process the award-winning milk they provide.”
