Our Stories - Gardiner Foundation Winners 2021

The children of two Western District Fonterra farmers have been rewarded for their hard work and dedication at the 2021 Gardiner Dairy Foundation Awards this week.

Rachel Dickson and Toby Fleming were each awarded tertiary study scholarships by the foundation, which invests in people and practices to support the development of a vibrant dairy industry.

The scholarships are awarded annually to students have shown a commitment to leadership, personal development and intend returning to regional Victoria after university. In addition, they must demonstrate sound academic achievement and having contributed to their community.

The scholarships are named in recognition of the significant contribution to the dairy industry.

Rachel, the daughter of Joanne and Bryan Dickson from Ecklin, was awarded the Jakob Malmo Scholarship.

Rachel attended Emmanuel College in Warrnambool and plans to study a Bachelor of Science at Melbourne University, majoring in animal science. She has worked on dairy farms here and in the UK, shown cattle at local shows and also volunteered in Timor-Leste teaching English to young children.

 
Toby Fleming.png

Toby, son of Tanya and Tim Fleming of Boorcan, received the Shirley Hancock Scholarship.

Toby completed VCE at Mercy Regional College at Camperdown, where he served as college captain and has been accepted to study a Bachelor of Agriculture (Technology) at the University of New England.

In 2019, Toby was selected as a Rural Youth Ambassador to talk with politicians about ways to provide better and more equal education for rural students. He is also actively involved with the Boorcan cricket club, serving as groundskeeper.
