Expert advice every step of the way

Nambrok farmers Jason and Casey Bermingham know the value of seeking expert advice, which is why they utilised Fonterra’s Farm Source Professionals when it came to expanding their business.

Their journey began working for wages on Jason’s family farm in the early 2000s, before progressing to a leasing arrangement in 2010 which allowed them to purchase a block shortly after.

Originally a dry block, the Berminghams developed and graded the land to improve the quality, in turn increasing their equity. In 2013 that allowed them to purchase the block they had been leasing.

Now milking 370 cows on 345 acres and another 200 acres of turn-out for young stock, dry cows and fodder conservation, Jason says they’ve reached a good size and they’re comfortable.

“Right from the beginning of our journey, the Farm Source Professional team has been there with us every step of the way.

“From helping us with our financial planning and budgets through improving the nutrition and pasture management side of things.

“Even with milk quality issues – they came out to farm and helped us get to the bottom of the problem,” said Jason.

However, as the farm grew, so did the need for extra staff and employment contracts, which fall under the purview of Casey.

Employment contracts are detailed. As an employer, you must cover all the avenues and make sure you’re doing the right thing.

It’s a big job, and that’s why Farm Source People Specialist Mick West helps Casey and other farmers with their employee contracts.

“It’s nice to know that it only takes a phone call to get some help, instead of trying to research it all yourself to make sure you’re doing it right,” said Casey.

“It’s peace of mind to know that you’ve got someone there that can help you do that.”

Mick West explained that the employment laws were constantly changing, creating potential headaches for farmers as well as their employees.

“In 2018 I came in and worked out some contracts and made sure they had all the right policies in place.

“Since then, employees have come and gone, and I have worked closely with Casey through the process with all new employees.

“While having good policies in place is important for the Berminghams, it’s also very important for their employees.

“We want to make sure that they’re safe on the farm, and they go home to their families and friends every night,” said Mick.
